Description

Superb Pair of French Parisian Mahogany Parquetry Bedside Chests by the esteemed House of Hugnet in Paris dating to around 1920. Famed for quality and craftsmanship this lovely pair of Hugnet chests have a raised serpentine shaped back and sides with quarter cut chevron parquetry to the top edged with ebony and fruitwood stringing. One cabinet has three drawers which are mahogany lined and with original knob handles and have chevron parquetry fronts with ebony & fruitwood stringing and the matching cabinet has a single drawer with open space for books etc. They stand on elegant long cabriole legs joined by a shaped frieze and the sides also are of parquetry with ebony and fruitwood stringing.
Each measures: 29.5" high x 10" deep x 12.5" wide
Biography
Founded by Cabinet Maker Francois Hugnet in 1849 in Rue St Antoine and later joined by his son Alexander they went on to establish the House of Hugnet winning medals at the Paris Exhibition of 1889 and became known for making fine furniture in the 18th century style using the finest quality materials and woods. The Company continues on today in the same establishment and the name of Hugnet is now one of Paris's best known furniture houses.
